Description

In recent years, the rapid advancement of communications and the need for fast and secure data exchange over the internet have driven users toward new, fast, and secure technologies. Among these, fiber optics, due to its nature, is a highly suitable solution compared to other technologies like ADSL and wireless communications, offering speeds up to 10 times faster than copper or wireless connections. Modems compatible with this technology are briefly called ONTs.

An ONT (Optical Network Terminal) functions similarly to a modem (modulator/demodulator of electrical signals transmitted over copper cables) but with the added capability to generate and receive optical pulses. Various types of data, including voice and data, are transmitted and received over a single fiber optic line. ONTs, commonly referred to as fiber optic modems, feature telephone inputs (FXS ports) for voice transmission and Ethernet inputs (LAN ports) for data transmission. Some models also include built-in antennas for wireless data transmission. The design, hardware, and technologies used in ONTs determine their capabilities and cost. Factors such as the number and type of network ports (100-based or 1000-based), telephone ports (POTS or FXS), and—if wireless is supported—the number, gain, and operating frequency of antennas all influence the performance and cost of the ONT.
